Named after the Delaware tribe, this city officially began its ascent in 1808 when some of the first settlers created a plan for the city. A hotel had been built in Delaware to take advantage of the soothing Sulphur springs but it was hardly a success and struggled for years. The citizens bought the failed hotel in order to give it to the Methodist Church in order to establish a college. With that act, Ohio Wesleyan College was founded. Throughout the 20th century, Delaware continued to grow thanks to its proximity to Columbus and the regular use of cars to get people downtown to work.

One of the most notable citizens of Delaware is Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States. Born in 1822, Hayes spent his childhood attending school in Delaware.
